2007 carb needle from JD kit does not fit?

I got JD kit (branded moose racing) stage 1. Install should be dead simple, so I screwed in the jet adapter and jet fitting, no problem. Went to install the needle... and it does not work, or I'm not doing it right.

I got the needle cover off, unbolted the retainer and got the stock needle out. On top of the needle there is a little shaft with washer pressed in, which holds the needle in the retainer. JD needle does not have this shaft, it just has E clip slots and that's it. Instructions say to just drop the JD needle in and screw down the retainer. Does this sound right?
