Recommended Posts

Plug chops are done to sort out or check your jetting - will help you determine if you're lean or rich on a particular circuit of your carb. Is there a specific issue you are trying to identify or resolve?

It will identify the main circuit the most accuratley, this is what the plug chop was designed for to find the best main for the bike.

When you do this, then you can start dicking around with the needle and needle clip position. The main directly affects the needle, so if you start messing with clip positions on the needle before finding out how well your main is for your bike, your wasting your time.

The best way to do a plug chop test is to get the bike fully warmed up by doing a couple laps or riding some trails for about 10 minutes. Find yourself a very nice straight away that's safe to do a top speed run. Shut the bike off and take your plug out and put a brand new one in and fire it up. Do not let it idle if you can, instantly jump on the throttle and go as fast as you can to WOT without spinning out through all the gears. Remember to get the engine to top RPM for each gear up to 5th. When your in 5th hold it at WOT for about 10 seconds and then pull the clutch in and kill the engine.

Come to a stop and pull the plug, put it in a baggie and put your old plug in and go back to camp/garage to analyze your plug.
