starter not working

A few rides back, my starter started acting acting very tired. It was rather sudden actually. Push the button you get a few labored rotations, then nothing. battery is good, relay checks out good, ground and all other connections are good. All symptoms point towards the starter. Tell me there is a way to remove the starter without removing the whole top end including the cylinder.

More info needed:

" battery is good" is know by....?

Hours on motor?

Stock battery?

You've obviously already checked all the grounds and harness connections....

You regularly start it in gear......?

New stock battery is new. The bike can be started using the kickstarter in neutral. The bike runs good. Well over 200 hundred hours on the motor.

Have you metered the battery while running and not ? You should get 12+ v when not, and 14.5+v when running.

If you start in gear a lot, you may have worn out the motor; remove and replace brushes. Be CAREFUL to keep track of the magnet order when disassembling.

Is there a way to remove the starter without removing the cylinder?
