08 KTM 450 xcr-w suspension help

Recommended Posts

Can anybody give me some tips on setting up my new to me 08 KTM 450xcrw? Specifically the forks are deflecting and too harsh over the fast hits. I have played around with the comp, rebound and preload but haven't found a good setting yet. I had a DRZ with gold valves that was much better than what I'm feeling with the 08 WP forks. Is revalve my only recourse?

Specs:

Stk springs front rear

oil height stk.

Forks 4mm above clamps

Weight 175

C rider

Fast desert rocky trails

rear sag 115mm/40mm static

20mm offset on adjustable clamps

12 psi tire pressure

have you tried full soft on comp? and also you can lower the oil amount a fair bit.

put a cable tie on the fork and see how far from bottoming you are.

Change to 2.5 weight PJ1 or Motul fork oil. Increase air space to 140mm. You could also remove two or three 24mm shims in the compression stack.

You will never get away from mid stroke harshness on big hits with the stock pistons. They are just too small port and can't flow the volume of oil required on sudden impacts.

To make them feel the way you want them, a re-valve is definitely in order.

Not sure who your local KTM guy is, but check out www.ridersedgesuspension.com

Ian has been tuning KTM's for YEARS and is an extremely fast expert woods racer. His stuff is the best.
