XR4 tail light question

Kind of a stupid question but my 2002 xr 400's tail light doesn't get brighter when i hit the brakes? This is normal right. I would think if they put a tail light on a bike that it would warn riders behind you when you are hitting the brakes, even if it is just a trial bike?

The stock USA version does not have a brake light, just a tail light.

USFS only requires a tail light and head light for riding at night so most XRs, if they have lights, only have those two.

You can easily convert the stock tail light to have a brake light. The stock bulb is dual filament. You just have to slide a new wire into the holder and solder it in there. Then get a hydrolic brake light switch for the rear master cylinder, around $15. Takes maybe an hour at the most as long as you know how to do some basic wiring.

But why do you want to signal to the guy trying to keep up with you that you are on the brakes?

I can think of several reasons. Mostly because I'm the guy behind him.

1. It's a 2 way trail and someone is coming from the other direction.

2. Wildlife on the trail.

3. Unexpected trail obstacle, ex. G-out, head high tree limb, booby trap, etc.

4. Trail branching

But why do you want to signal to the guy trying to keep up with you that you are on the brakes?

Because some of them are trying to pass, You've never come up on a slower rider on the trail? :smirk:
