Shock shock

Bought a 2000 KLX300 a year or so ago. Decided to do some routine maintenance last week, starting with the rear end. Got the swingarm off & having it powdercoated. Drained the shock oil and got a container full of what looks like grey water. There's a slight slipperiness to it, but not much. I am thinking I might be the first person to ever change the shock oil on this bike.

So, I guess I can expect a certain improvement in handling once I put it all back together. Unless, of course, what I drained out is normal. Anyone have any experience with shock oil?
