Flattrack xr/crf 100s in SEMDTRA

Anyone in here racing their 100 in the SEMDTRA mad dog series this? I plan on doing as many events as i can this year in the stock class, and will head up to Coleridge Speedway in Asheboro, NC on the other weekends as time permits.

Anyone got tips on set up? The bikes pretty much have to be stock to run at the Coleridge events. I've got the spec tires, forks turned around, more oil in the forks to keep them from bottoming out, will order some gearing, but that's it. Any other tricks?

Oh, and what pressure do you guys run the tires? i'm sure that depends on track conditions, but what's a good baseline?

I know suspension would make a huge difference, but rules do not allow an aftermarket shock (at least where i'll be racing most of the time). Its really a Bone Stock class. The mad dog stock class does allow for some mods, but that's not in the budget right now anyway. I just want to do what i can on the cheap and focus on riding the pants of the thing and get fast i can.

What's that all about??? I don't flat track so I'm not familiar with it.

You basically swap the left and right forks and them the axle runs behind the forks instead of in front of them. It decreases trail and shortens the wheel base so the bike turns in faster. Someone correct me if i'm wrong here.

If it's like any of the races down here, I would cheat as much as you can and start with a Wiseco 58mm piston and a mild cam, cut the crap out of your air box or run a pod, even make a new pipe, but remount the stock guard, muffler, and paint it black. As long as you're not winning every race, no one will seriously care.

You're absoulutely right, but its all about having fun too...

After taking a look around, most of the bikes are moded in one way or another. The front runners are fast, but so are their bikes. Lot had pipes and shocks, and who know what else for engine work.

Once i get proper gearing on it for 1/5 mile it will make a huge difference. I didn't really get into the powerband until the end of the small straight and then it was time to turn in again.

1 Get the frame tied together under the motor

2 Get the axle all the way to the front (short wheelbase)

3 I never could ride mine with forks flipped it turned in great but back snapped out under power instead lowwer forks in clamps or limit fork travel internally

4 Make sure chain is as free as possible can't waste hp on o ring chain also you can change it to 420 with xr80 sprockets you said need gearing nows a good time

5 hidden motor mods atc200 carb,cam,lighten flywheel,pod filter,

6 14/50 is close on gear start in second run 2nd thruout you want her wound tight so it will slow down against compression

My son started flattracking on xr100 we have moved on but I still ride maddog on it sometimes.You really need a rear shock.And a pipe would help alot!

Have fun with it.protect the bottom they will have to be flying to pass you outside.Work on your starts!

Thanks Bob, that's some good advice...2nd gear start is necessary, at least for me. I did try 1st for giggles, but almost ended up on my head and blew that race on the start. I'll be sticking to 2nd gear launches from now on :thumbsup:

I didn't think about using the smaller xr80 chain and sprockets. I had already ordered the 428 size so i'll be using them. I got a fmf pipe, uni filter, and jettting on the way. I'll be racing it again this weekend.

What are you using to tie the frame together? Is this the BBR frame brace i've read about? I know a welder and could probably get him to fabricate something.

I'll be there on Saturday with the Eastern NC guys. I ride a lot with them on our practice tracks, but the only other race I have done with SEMDTRA was the indoors in Florence this past January. If I race, I'll be in the stock 100 class on my stock bike, leaving the Mod bike at home. "If I race" being dependent on if I can walk or otherwise move after Supermoto at Summit Point, WV the day before! I probably should race, my buddy Robert Lewis #68 says he isn't going to run the stock 100s this time he thinks, so everyone's chances of winning just got a lot better!

There are definitely some fast guys out there. Dirt track is whole 'nother world compared to road racing, which is my background. BTW, i use to live in VA and have ridden SP many times. The Shenandoah course would be amazing on a supermoto for sure, it was hella fun on an SV.

I got good riding tips from some other guys, but with only 30 laps under my belt i've got a lot to learn. I run the stock bike in both classes just to get seat time and have fun...but i see how this, just like any racing, gets pretty competetive - hence the upcoming mods :thumbsup:

I'll be on bike 97, stop by and say hello. I should be with some other Charlotte and Apex guys.

Your on the right track! Yep you and a welder can hook the frame together, look at banke performance I copied theirs myself.I like to run xr80 16 inch front wheel also helps the little bike turn into the corner better and a little lighter than the stock 19.There are posts on here that show how much wieght you can get off the flywheel, it really helps.I ran a inner rotor ign. for awhile but like the lightened flywheel better.I found some old handle bar setbacks, I use them to move the handlebars up 1 inch and forward 2 inch, this opens up the cockpit alot and gives you knee room.

Good luck we are off to Wichita KS to runn 3 races in 3 days with the "Great Plains Flattrack Series"

I forgot what number you were, so I also forgot to say hey! But I got some video of you in the race. I don't think you were in my heat. Looking at your bike, you can tell we are both from some form of pavement background. All my buddies hate my handguards when they ride my bike. I like them! :thumbsup:

Yep, I am the dude that caused the restart after feelin the pinch. Tried to get around my buddy Mike Wheeler, and didn't quite expect him to let off that quick. Oops! :confused: Least I can walk now, the 3 hour ride home SUCKED!

You going to Neeses? My bud Erick Baker is trying to talk me into going. Not sure what I am going to do!

We have 4 practice tracks in our little area here near Rocky Mount/Tarboro/Wilson. If you ever want to come out and ride with us, let me know! It is usually Me, Erick and Ben Baker, Robert Lewis, Troy, Austin, and Ervin and George Brewer, Mike Wheeler and some newer guys that are setting up bikes. 2 cushion and 2 clay. My track is sort of a weird mix.

Great footage Gerry! That's me in the blue shirt you past on the last lap :confused: Way to work up the pack. You know that was a money race, right? Ha ha, I guess i won $15, so you might have got 20-25 for second? :worthy:

Thanks for the invite! Dirt track is just a ton of fun, and a whole new challenge. I need to work on my body position and relaxing a bit. I wish there was a track nearby, you guys are probably 4hrs from Charlotte. :thumbsup:

Robert came over and helped me with the carb. What a guy. I thought the float needle was stuck, so we pulled the bowl and everything was actuating properly, but there was some junk in the cavity where the valve seats causing fuel to overflow. duh! I'm still working on jetting since putting the pipe and filter on it. It was running really rich and sputtering off idle, and getting on the gas. I tried a ton of different combination....leaving me scratching my head. After looking at it closely, the needle jet was bent, musta got tweeked putting it back together at the track, that's when it started acting up mysteriously. Don't work on carbs with adrenaline running in the blood stream :busted: I straightened it out the best i could and moved the clip up since the plug was black. Soaked the carb overnight, put the larger 38 pilot in and runs pretty good down low now, the stumble off idle is gone. There's a bit of sputtering up top on the main so i ordered a 100 and 102 jets and a new needle and clip to be safe. Once i get the bike running right, i can get that out of my head and work on riding the damn thing....Almost there!

Oh and if anyone has a set of xr100 forks for sale, straight, no dings, 2000+ would be nice, let me know, mine are pretty bent.

Yea you should. Spoon on a set a tires and you're good to go. After watching the video its looks pretty easy, but man, let me tell you its way harder than it looks. I went in saying how hard can it be? Coming from road racing, i personally think its a huge challenge to go fast. I have a lot to learn, and unlearn, from riding on pavement.

      A while back I picked up a '95 XR250R swingarm that I plan on installing on my '90 XR200R in the near future, to save a little weight and have rear disk brakes. 
      I missed out on a totally complete rear brake system for $75 a while back which sucks. I look on Ebay every now and then hoping to find a great deal on a complete or near complete setup but no luck lately.
      Is anyone aware if Honda used the same brake system that was used on the '90-'95 XR250R, on any other bikes? 
      If so, then I can expand my search. If not, then I'll just keep looking at 250 parts til I find the right setup for the right price.

      Has anybody purchased/used one of these Arrowhead IHA6017 cdi boxes??  I tried 2 different ones of these on a 1987 and 1994 XR200R, and the bikes won't even start.  Bikes just pop and backfire, had to put the old cdi's back on.  I noticed when I ordered the boxes they stated "advance ignition curves" in the specs.  The box is also much bigger than the stocker and won't fit in the rubber mount.  I didn't mess with moving around the timing to try and get these to work....I just sent them back.

      Recently picked up a 1987 xr200r in pretty good condition, all stock.  The carb was all gummed up and running real rich, and the previous owner removed the baffle and end cap from the exhaust, but left the air box top chute in place.  I cleaned up the carb and verified all stock jetting, needle position, air screw, etc.  Where we live the quieter the better for off-roading so I ordered a new baffle and end cap, but did ride the bike for a week before the parts arrived.  With the muffler parts out I had a brown plug and plenty of power throughout the entire throttle range.  Got the muffler parts, installed them and now the bike falls flat while climbing hills and gradually rolling on the throttle, I get a burble at low speed sometimes and I have a black sooty plug.  I'm kind of at a loss on this one.  I realize that the parts restricted the exhaust....but it's basically back to stock and I've had these bikes stock before and they ran fine.  Seeing as I have all stock jets and am getting a sooty plug, I'm wondering if electrics are weak?  I also tried adjusting the air screw in/out and moving the needle clip to position 2, either of the two made my problem worse.
      Any ideas?

      So the other day I notice that the rear shock spring on our 1994 xr200r had cracked and separated about 2 coils from the top.  No big I thought....just go on Ebay and pick something.  Well, after a few days of looking I can't find ANYTHING used or aftermarket!  The stock Honda spring #52401-KT0-691 is "no longer available".  Can anybody lead me in the right direction to get a replacement spring for this bike??

      I have a 1999 xr200r. I used to ride it like a champ than i stored it for a year getting it out once in a while to run. Than i took it out a couple days ago started it and it ran and died instantly. I cleaned out the carb put everything back together and still sane thing. You have to feather the throttle to keep it running. It also made a loud pop and it jerks you when you ride it. I changed the spark plug, cleaned the carb, and put new gas in the tank. Any ideas? Wanted to ride it this weekend...
