XR650L Questions

Recommended Posts

I have decided on buying a new XR650L. I have a few questions:

- are Dave's Carb Mods the same as uncorking?

- what is the correct jetting for 0-1500 ft?

- I am 6'4" tall and weigh 300 lbs. Will I need to get the shocks replaced to support my weight? If yes, where can I find some?

- according to the Honda website, the MSRP is $6,499; what can I reasonably expect to talk a dealer down to? I have looked around and the lowest I found was around $5,500; is that accurate?

Dave's mods are typically done as part of the "uncorking" procedure.

Plan to: remove the airbox snorkel, replace the paper air filter with a good foam filter, remove the smog octopus (leave the crankcase breather oil separator in place), install block-off plates on the engine where you removed the smog crap (you can easily make these out of aluminum stock), rejet the carb, shim the needle, and drill the slide. Done!

New shock? no' new spring? YES! I would recommend replacing the fork springs as well as the shock spring. A fork bridge would also be a good idea to stiffen up the fork... unless you plan to do a USD swap.

Price on a new bike? Dunno... I wouldn't look at new bikes as there are too many used, low mile XRLs on the market at some very good prices.

I was Googling around just last night looking at new XRL's in our area ( Georgia) and most of the ones I saw seemed to come in around $5600-5800, so I'd say $5500 is pretty decent. I have read some folks reporting new '09's for $4999, but I think that's the exception, I couldn't find anything that low around here.

I would prefer to buy used. It would be nice if I didn't have to do the mods myself. When I search craigslist (via searchtempest.com) there isn't much available in my area [97420]; most of the listed bikes cost >= $4,000. I would just assume pay the extra $1,500 for a new bike. Where else should I search?

Thank you both very much =)

I've seen them go for around $2,500 for 2001 and newer. you just have to be patient if you were to wait for a used one. However a new bike would be great so you could do the breakin yourself and the mods. you would learn a lot doing the work yourself

This is the first time in a looooong time that there are no XRLs in the Boise Craigslist. There were a few that were listed off and on for quite a while. If they didn't sell last fall, they will probably pop up again. Craiglist Idaho and Oregon has a BUNCH of used pigs for sale...

There are a couple of 02's in Bend for $2900 & $2950:http://bend.craigslist.org/mcy/2322897075.html http://bend.craigslist.org/mcy/2299215610.html.

A nicely modded '07 in Woodland for $4900: http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/mcy/2346481604.html

A '97 in CdA, Idaho for $2500:http://spokane.craigslist.org/mcy/2328821421.html
