New to Forum and Motorcycles - Bought a DRZ400S - Wanna Change Color

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just bought a bright yellow DRZ400S and the first thing I want to do is completely replace all the yellow parts with black.

I also want to replace the large front fender with a sleeker more angular one like the one that comes on the SM model.

Can I just buy a whole Acerbis Plastic kit for the SM and it will fit on my S? Is the only difference the front fender?

Does the headlight shroud come with the Acerbis kit or is that separate?

What are the most popular ways to change the gas tank color?

What are the most popular oversized tanks? Do any plastic ones come in shiny finish?

Also what is the general consensus on the Low Dual Sport/Comfort seat from Seat Concepts?

Thanks!

Best way to change plastics is just go acerbis. They're not exact but they'll fit fine. As far as the headlight and gas tank go you can always just get a bigger tank / new headlight or buy an OEM headlight and repaint the tank.

OEM Light plastics here:

I think they look way cooler if you just rip off all those old stickers and throw something on like akaDAN showed above.

So are there two separate Acerbis kits, one for the S and one for the SM or just one for both? I have an S but would like the SM front fender, so I dont wanna buy a full S kit plus a separate SM fender.

And I like those over sized tanks but does anyone make one with a shiny black finish?

Also what's the general view of the low seat from Seat Concepts?

Thanks guys!

Do you still have the black parts?

Let me know if you want to sell your headlight and radiator shrouds.

Will do. I guess once it's all black I may as well.

So... does anyone have any input on my question about replacing the plastics on my DRZ-400S with a full Acerbis Kit but going with an DRZ-400SM front fender instead of the S version? Will I need to buy each piece separately then? Can I just use a full SM kit on my S? Is there even more than one kit or just one for both bikes?

And any input on the Seat Concepts low seat?

Black Acerbis kit, w/ IMS tank. You should be able to pick up a used tank on ebay as these show up all the time when guys swap out for larger tanks.

Ok so I got the black Acerbis DRZ400 kit from this website and I cannot for the life of me get the freakin rear fender on. What the hell is going on here? It really seems like it will not fit!

Check the thumpertalk classifieds too. Fair amount in there too. Myself and others have used ims 4 gallons for ~$150. Much better than $400.

      Hey all,
I'm looking at buying a 2004 Suzuki DRZ400EK or at least I think it's an EK according to Vin lookup websites, but it does not appear to have a kickstarter. I was told the bike was owned by a motorcycle dealer and that it has a current green sticker, and a California license plate but has not been registered for the streets since 2011. I want this as a dual sport but am not clear if the fact that it already has a plate means I am good to register it or if maybe they took away the ability to register it after it was plated, California loves to do that kind of stuff. Since the bike was owned by a dealer I would think they were up on the latest regulations in California, but who knows. Can anyone add any insight as to what I should look for on the bike itself like the carburetor, model numbers etc? Or do I just try my luck at the DMV?

      Hi,
I have a 2003 DRZ (actually a KLX400) and the head tube bearings are shot.  I ordered a new set to install but I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on other parts I should replace while I have the front disassembled.  I was thinking about new rubber fork protectors, but are there other things that wear out on the DRZ front ends that you can only get to when disassambled?
I also broke off a replacement key that I got for the steering lock.  I must have been made of cheap pot-metal.  Should I just remove the whole lock mechanism?
Any tips or tricks for getting the old bearings out and the new ones in would be welcome!
      Thanks!

      Hey Guys,
I recently bought a 2003 DRZ400S and thought it would be a good idea to check the valves clearance etc . I timed the engine on TDC with the magneto mark aligned as per the manual but I find the cam timing slightly odd. The arrows pointing upward are on the 1st and 15th pin as they should but with the magneto timing mark aligned they are not perfectly straight. Same goes for the arrows that should be parallel to the cylinder head casing. Is this normal or should they be absolutely perfect ?
