Dr 200 not running right

I have a 2005 dr 200 that has set for about 8 months. I recently replaced the petcock with a pingel and now I seem to be having carb problems. It will start right up and idles fine, but it cuts out and tries to die at higher rpms after warming up. It backfires occasionally also. I would guess the carb needs cleaned but I am a little nervous about trying this myself. I have never worked on a carb before. Is it something a novice could tackle or would I be better off taking it to a repair shop. Should I try to seafoam it first?

Thanks for any help.
