2 stroke sumo input

I've been kicking around the idea of sumoing my 300 XCW and had a few questions. I'm going to use it for the track days and no racing. I wanted to get the input from guys that have done this.

Do you regret spending the $$$?

How is the performance comparing to a 4 stroke? Fun factor comparing to a 4 stroke?

I have a XR650R that I use on the street and track. It's great on the street but you can really feel the heft on the track.

I searched it and it seems that the biggest issues are no engine braking so backing it in is almost impossible and wheel spin exiting turns. Any more inputs?

I am in the midst of doing this to my GasGas 250 and yes no engine braking but it will snap out of the turns ?.

Simplest way for me to say this is... "total kick in the pants to ride"

It takes way more clutch control to keep it in control IMO

Oh and you will need at least a 310mm front rotor to get these to slow down ?

If it's plated you'll be fine I brought mine down and they tried to tell me I couldn't ride out in Gorman so I said I have a plate and the guy didn't believe me and so he looked and well had to let me ride hehe ?

I have a sumo setup on my 02 CR 250 smoker. If I can get the friggin pain in the ass to run right, it's a hoot to ride! I have ridden my buddies 97 YZ 250 smoker tard on our local sumo track and had a blast, that is what gave me the idea to build my own

you guys are nuts! LOL I used to race a kx85RR(lol) and it was a freaking blast to ride, but I raced it roadrace style in an asphalt only series. Then I jumped up to a yz250f and now I am on a KTM 450SMR. I couldnt imagine no engine braking, and a top end hit trying to pitch me off the darn thing every corner.....once you get used to it, I am sure its a hoot, scary and fun all in the same 10Ft stretch of ashpalt! I picked up the bike back in 2002 or so as and Enduro model. It was used as

a track bike by a local GasGas dealer before that. He rebuilt it with all the

wiring harness for being street legal. I rode it for several years as my main

trail bike. Sometime around 2008 I got the Supermoto bug and made the

modifications you see in the pictures. It was a project in process. First I

ran the 21" front and 19" rear with Dunlop K180 dirt track tires before going

whole hog with the 17"s and big brakes. As well as changing the gearing.

A google search on "EC250SM" should find several more posts over time

with the project. Some of the posts are on supermotojunkie.com.

Over all it is a great bike. Not something you would want to take on the

freeway for any extended time, but, a lot of fun in the canyons and slower

street rides. It will pull 80-90MPH for a short sprint no problem. I just do not

want to flogg it that hard. It will cruise all day long @ 55MPH and get pretty

good gas mileage for a 2-stroke.

GasGas, TM, beta, and husky *i think... all make factory 2 stroke supermotos, you should be able to find something you like between them

You just missed a set on E-bay about a week ago.

There was a guy on supermotojunkie.com selling

a set for his Husky that I think will fit the GG.

You may try asking in the "Wanted" section of

GasGasRiders.org forum.

Or do what I did. Buy rims and spokes and re-lace your old

hubs... Well, I bought a spare set of off-road wheels and

had them built into SM wheels. I kept my original wheel set

if I ever wanted to go back.

It just takes $$$... or Loonies eh!

Back in 2008 I had tried fitting my front DRZ 400sm wheel to my 2006 GG 250EC and if I remember correctly they almost lined up in the forks accept for the caliper and the spacers. I don't remember the axel being the correct size though. Can you provide dimensions for the custom made stuff?

After looking at all the options. I figured in the long run it would be

cheaper AND easier to source a second set of stock wheel hubs.

No new bearings, spacers or caliper carriers.....sort of. I used a

new carrier bracket from MotoMaster for a 1999 or so KTM. They

used the same Brembo caliper and Marzocchi forks as my 1998 GasGas.

My 320mm rotor was made and stamped GASGAS..for their factory SM.

The wheel hubs are AJP I believe, and are shared with most modern

Huskys and possibly TMs.

The front axle was the same diameter and the guy who made the spacers and re-locator bracket also made me a rear axle as it was a tad thinner.

If I can I will try and get the dimensions for ya

But like Jeff is saying getting a set of GG hubs and lacing the wheels is way easier ?
