Decarbonizing Cylinder Heads

Recommended Posts

What do you guys use to decarbonize your heads and valves? I find brass wire brushes not cutting it, especially on the top side of intake valve heads where the deposits are really caked on and baked hard. Is there anything available to a home mechanic that will strip carbon but not harm valve coating or valve seats?

Baking soda through a sand blaster works great. I don't think you are going to get carbon off of Ti valves without damaging the coating.

we have taken em and put them in an electric drill, then grab the head with a scotch brite pad, then gently spun the valve. Cleans em up some but your right.. getting em shiny wont' likely happen without damaging the coating.
