Fork Stroke vs Travel

In the 2009 Honda CRF450 manual the fork is specified to have

Travel: 273 mm

Stroke: 310 mm

Does anyone know what exactly they are measuring to get these numbers?

I measured the bottom of the chrome slider to the bottom of the outer tube and got very close to 310 mm, which makes sense. Is Honda saying that the internal cartridge damper only has 273 mm of travel? If so how is that possible?

I could understand this in terms of the shock where the shock only has a much shorter stroke then the bikes actually travel because of the of linkage.

Forks are at an angle. You need more stroke from an angle to achieve a straight up measurement of travel.
