1982 IT250 - build time - transformation from trail to vintage MX

Recommended Posts

Racing my 1981 YZ465 all season in our Hammer and Tongs race circuit. I posted the rebuild here over the past winter (frame up restore).

Bike is a rocket....wow.....

Im racing two classes now, over 50 Evolution and Open Evolution.

Want to race more classes...so a 250 seemed to be the right thing....until I really get stupid and pick up a 125.

:smirk:

One of our inmates here on TT had an 1982 IT250 for sale locally. I know the differences between the YZ and IT, and the last year of the YZ, is rather scarce and...can bring a shiny penny if in good shape...so...I purchased the IT and brought her home.

Here are a few shots on the trailer and right after I got home.

note, this bike is ALL ORIGINAL.

yes

sticker on the Monoshock resevoir

Lights work front and rear

stock bars

stock grips

supplied tools in the fenderbag (fenderbag has no tears, snags etc and zipper actually works!)

look at the shots of the very low hanging IT pipe...

nope, you see right...no dents or dings...

so...here she is before I scrubbed her down....

Plans for the build :prof:

I have an entire front end off an 81 YZ 250/460 (43mm forks, wheel, clamps etc)---install, proper springs, Race Tech goldvalves, M12 front tire.

Rear swing arm off an 81

1981 YZ monoshock - going to Brad in Portland, he did my 81 465, he gets this one too, will install a CR shock reservoir so I have compression as well as rebound -- proper rate springs.

S12 Rear Tire on an 81 rear wheel and brake set up

Eric Gorr will get the jug and head and have him to his voodoo to turn this beast in to a YZ and CR 250 Evolution class death machine.

V-Force Reeds

38mm carb (up from 36mm)

1981 YZ250 DG pipe and silencer.

Favorite bars and related.

Number plates to match my 81 465.....

then, its time to go hunting, Vintage MX Evo class style. :smirk:

cant tell you how pumped I am to have this remarkable survivor as a foundation, makes my plans and timeline sooooooo nice!

I will save and store the entire front and rear end off the IT.....

this, is gonna be fun.

Stand by the build...

and yes...appearance wise,,,will look like a blue fluffy IT250...

yeah Francis...until the gate drops...

Damn, what kind of fool would sell a bike that looked like that!

Amazing what a REAL wash made her look like.:ride:

I do miss her a little...just a little. I need to get my '79 back in the garage so there's an IT to look at.

I can't wait to see and hear that...looking forward to the build process.

Glad she's gone to a good Yami-loving home!

SERIOUSLY WHO WOULD SELL A SURVIVOR like this??

(Glad you did and thank you for such an awesome transaction!...she is in a good Vintage respectful home and will see some checkered flags here shortly if the rider can get his act together)

Okay...time to start the build...

Started tearing her down so I can build her back up.

No surprises anywhere....not enough hours on it to have any surprises....

Residue to be replaced by

Michelin S12 rear, M12 front

DSCF1408.jpg

81 YZ465 Triples and Forks mounted right up.

DSCF1409.jpg

will use the IT front and rear wheel, the front wheel I will use a DLS of the front of an 81 465...bit more bite...im a heavy front brake old phart...

DSCF1410.jpg

I measured the YZ vs IT swing arm, about a 1/2 inch longer (the YZ) so I will stick to the IT swingarm

81 465 shock is boxed up as is the Motor, UPS tomorrow....

You're making some quick work there, mate! You're right about the 465 triples and forks being way beefier.

Intake side of the piston looks pretty scuffed, was probably time to replace anyway. Just for shiggles and gits, what piston size was in there?

I hope you plan to run the IT plastics and lights on your MX sleeper. That would be too cool.

Just reread the original post. I love it. Blue plastics and lights all the way. Stuff the fender bag with some foam and mount a little roll chart holder on the crossbar for the full effect :-)

Actually, I told him to leave the original tools in the tool bag so the other guys could hear them clank around as he passed them. Ring-ding-clank-clank...then all you see is tail-light.:ride:

I have a horn that I Pulled off a KTM990, so am going to mount that up as well behind the front number plate.

nothing like a honk in the berm as I go under...with a taillight through the roost

Yup........

I want to show up on the blue fluffy IT woods bike on the moto line.

Yeah, not bad though....the piston was already boxed up with the cylinder and head...never checked the top, but....I did scrape a bit of carbon off the top and saw no markings other than the exhaust point arrow...so most likely stock..
