small end crank wear

Recommended Posts

G,day from oz,

have been rebuilding my nx650 dominator (xr650l motor), to date new parts 101mm je piston, rebore, hotcam stage 1 cam, cam chain, cam bearings, rocker arms, head cleaned up and stem seals, valves reset. the motor has 60k on it

I thought bugger it i will give it to my mechanic to put back together. got a phone call from him today about excessive wear in the small end crank wear the piston pin goes through, said it's not much but wants me to make the call whether to go ahead.

Question! what constitutes excessive wear in your opinion? which way up/down or sideways?

What will happen if i continue with the rebuild as is?

Mega, mega bucks for a new crank.

thanks lads, this has been a six month project, with a new baby in the middle, im so close!!!! but want to get it right.

cheers,

Sam

Pro-x is fine, I wouldn't put a new rod in it if it's within spec.

The specs are in your shop manual, measure your new piston pin and then measure your small end on the rod..if it's within spec than put her back together.

I've used the Pro-x conrods on a few of my bikes..No failures yet. It actually doesn't cost that much to get the new rod put in,,last guy charged me between 60-100$ to press the pin out etc..Crank was all he worked on,,no stripping engines or anything for that price..Best do it if you want piece of mind and no knocking should it not be right..

Have to say if I go that far into a motor I'd normally do the mains as well but that's just me being a "kill two birds with one stone" kinda guy..Whether you do the same is down to you or the mechanic and money..Way Honda charge us down here for parts is a crime..I think from memory you can get one main from a good bearing shop..the other needs to come from Honda at a ridiculous price..ie,,Them trying to charge me $265.00 for a set of rings being one example of the price gouging Blue Wing Honda indulge in...

I'd imagine Aussies similar

Here's pro-x so similar pricing though not for an XR/XL but I'm sure he can get them..

I think I would buy the TKRJ rod kit since it's made in Japan, I'm not sure but isn't the pro-x made in China?
