Do you need full side racks no matter what size saddle bags you get?

Recommended Posts

It happens more often than most would think. I poked a bunch of small holes in a new set of Steelpony saddle bags while brushing through roadside shrubbery at full noise last week. It goes with the territory.

If you only ride on the road then you won't be poking holes in 'em, eh?

Well of course it's going to happen if you're running full tilt through the shrubbery.

There's the one side of the spectrum where people put their bikes and gear in a fully enclosed trailer to only see a few miles of the open (but well paved) road, and then there's the almost extreme other end of the spectrum where people blast through the bush and count it a victory if, at the end of the day, no one is bleeding and nothing is leaking (the most extreme end of the spectrum being the people who buy their bike and gear and just set it on fire).

i'm using one of these caterpillar waterproof bags for sexpeditions on the drz now. it's cheap ($25 shipped from ebay if you find one) and fairly rugged. if you happen to use a rack on the tail, it fits very nicely. 23" or so, and sleeping bag sized. it is almost air tight. waterproof in a storm, maybe in a river.
