Brake pad question

Hi, I changed my rear brake pads yesterday for the first time and when i took out the old pads they had a kind of flat metal plate the same shape attatched to them. I'm guessing it's just a guard to protect the pads but my question is should i put these metal plate things on my new pads or do u not really need them?? Thanks.

They are heat insulators. They come on some pads, not on the stock ones. You can run them if you like.
