Home Suspension Modification?

Has anyone modified the valves in their sock or forks at home. I mean have you drilled out holes or changed shims to improve the valve performance? How did it work?

Before getting into it, I suggest you buy some suspension videos, tools, and maybe buy a Gold Valve kit for shock and fork. It comes with valves, lots of shims, and I think a video is included.
