Coil and stator ohm readings?

Recommended Posts

I don´t know how a PDF can be misplaced, but I only found the 450 manual. The 450 has a separate coil so it might be different from the 250 which is built in to the cap. But here is what the 450 manual says (maybe someone can copy/paste from the 250 manual?):

"Measuring Coil Resistance

If the arcing tester is not available, the coil can be

checked for a broken or badly shorted winding with an

ohmmeter. However, an ohmmeter cannot detect layer

shorts and shorts resulting from insulation breakdown

under high voltage.

• Remove the ignition coil (see Ignition Coil Removal).

• Measure the primary winding resistance [A].

○Connect an ohmmeter between the coil terminals.

○Set the meter to the x 1 Ω range, and read the meter.

• Measure the secondary winding resistance .

○Pull the spark plug cap off the lead.

○Connect an ohmmeter between the high tension lead and

the ground lead terminal.

○Set the meter to the x 1 kΩ range, and read the meter.

Ignition Coil Winding Resistance

Primary windings: 0.28 ∼ 0.38 Ω (at 20°C (68°F))

Secondary windings: 7.65 ∼ 10.35 kΩ (at 20°C (68°F))"

Found it, here are the 250 values:

Ignition Coil Winding Resistance

Primary windings: 0.077 ∼ 0.104 Ω

Secondary windings: 4.56 ∼ 6.84 kΩ

To test stator;

○Disconnect the magneto lead connector.

○Connect the hand tester as shown in the table 2.

○Note the readings (total 2 measurement).

Table 2: tester + to black/red lead, tester - to red/white lead = 27.2 ∼ 40.8Ω

tester + to white lead, tester - to yellow lead 1.76 ∼ 2.64 Ω

To test magneto output voltage;

○Connect the hand tester [A] to the connector as shown

in the table 1, using the needle adapter set [C].

○Start the engine.

○Run it at the rpm given in the table 1.

○Note the voltage readings (total 2 measurements).

@4 000 rpm

tester range 250 V AC Black/Red

lead Red/White lead 40 V or more

tester range 50 V AC White lead Yellow lead 15 V or more
