XR 80- How much difference from stock 14/46 to 13/46 sprockets?

Recommended Posts

My son has been riding his XR 80 for a while now, so he is completely used to it the way it is. The area we ride in has some good hills and stuff, so I thought I would change up his sprocket ratio a little to give him some low end grunt. The bike has the stock 14/46. I ordered a 13 tooth cs sprocket for it.

How much different is it going to feel for him? I want him to have some more low end power, but I am hoping the tendancy isn't going to be looping out or whatever. have any of you made this change, and if so how much difference did it make?

Going down 1 tooth on the front sprocket is close to going up 2 to 3 teeth on the rear. The 14/46 combo gives you a 3.28 to 1 ratio, and the 13/46 gives you a 3.53 to 1 ratio. It should be a slight but noticable difference, and you'll have to shift it sooner, but I wouldn't think it's anything drastic unless you pin it and dump the clutch...

14/49 = 3.50 to 1

But it's easier and cheaper to change the front sprocket.
