Need help on knee guards!

Recommended Posts

So I need some new guards. I broke my Thor Force guards and now I need some new ones as my cheap Shift Enforcers like to move when I crash and not do their job.

I like the hinging style like the Forces with the protection above the knee.

I'm pretty set one one of these and basically just want to know which ones can handle my extra large legs. I'm 5'11" 220lbs. Unfortunately I haven't even seen any of these in the local moto shops so I can't go try them on.

The price on these looks awesome, but in my experience you usually get what you pay for?

Wish I could help but, if the Shift Enforcers are moving on you, I don't know what to tell you! I have them and they have never moved when riding/crashing in over a year.

Yea twice now in the same week. Went down at a very low speed and now I've got mega bruised knee caps.

I have Fox Titan (older model) and never moved on me. They feel bulky under the pants and the knee cap hinge doo hickey catches on the inside of the pants sometimes. After a long day the straps tend to rub the back of my legs but I'm sure if I wore something underneath it wouldn't be bad. I like the looks of the Acerbis ones in your post and would like to try them. They look slim and not so many bulky moving parts

I am 6'0" and weigh 215. I have the MSR Reflex guards. Don't move at all! However, you need be aware that if you hyper-extend your knee (like if you sit on your feet), the shin plate & thigh plate can pop over a plastic stop over the hinged knee cap. If that happens, you can't straighten your leg! Need to pop it back in. Now, that doesn't happen at all when riding, but I noticed it when I was stretching one day.

Regarding the A.R.C. stuff from rocky mountain.. its all top notch quality. I still have a jersey, pants, and chest protector from made by A.R.C. and they are 5+ years old. I also owned the first version of the 240 hinged boots they sell. They were great too. (i actually had them stolen, they didnt wear out).

Ive gotten away from A.R.C. because I can get killer deals elsewhere through some connections but not at all because of quality.

Edit: You can also read the reviews on rockymoutainatvmc. They are right on that page theres 106 of them.

I have the fox titan guards, they stay in place really well. Only thing is you will want socks that go above your knees because the top strape will cut into the back of your leg.

Ya this is good advice. They sell "knee sleeves" and "sleeve/sock combos." The combo is just a really long sock.

Why not buy the Thor Force again?

That's my question as well. How long did the other ones last you?

I get about a year out of mine, one season of snow and one season on dirt. By that time they've got a funk to them that won't wash out either. :smashpc:

Far more comfortable and last longer than the $20 cheapies. I believe Acerbis makes a similar model, might give those a shot if you can find them?

Why not buy the Thor Force again?

There are 2 things keeping me from picking up another set. First the neoprene or whatever is that wraps around your entire leg is warm to me. I think a knee sock under one of these other guards that just have the strap may be cooler. The 2nd is sometimes I would notice a weird pressure point on the inside of my knees when I was really squeezing with my legs. Neither of these problems were ever bad enough for me to throw them out just figured I would try something new.

Good to hear about the ARC stuff. I may just give those a try and see what happens. If they suck at least it's only $25.
