Bike for Dunes?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, my name is William and I am looking to buy my first dirtbike!

I'm really thinking that a 2-stroke 250cc will be enough, but I'm not sure what style to buy. Motocross? Offroad-Trail or DualSport?

I am 18 years young and am 5'10". I weigh 140lbs

I mostly want to ride Dunes or Desert Trails

I have some riding experience with ATVs, but none with a DirtBike

I won't be racing at all

I'm very mechanically inclined, and I will mostly be doing my own repair work

I don't have any preference as far as brand goes, but I have heard that 2stroke is better for sand

I'd like to find a used bike under $2000 that suits my needs

Thanks in advance!

The title originally said "Bike for Dunes and Street" but that was a mistake, I didn't mean to add street.

I'm looking to mostly ride Dunes or trails. I'm not sure if that influenced DRZ400S recommendation or not haha

250 2stroke,pick a color

Any style in particular? Like Motocross instead of Off-Road? I'm not sure which type would have the best suspension and stuff for sand..

Also, i've seen a few 4-strokes on sale that look like pretty good deals.

Any reason why I should get the 2-stroke over the 4-stroke? I don't really know what the difference will look like until I get to the dunes

You'll be fine on a 250 (mx or offroad). MX bike will have a bigger hit but the enduro model will have a better top speed. CC per CC, 2 strokes make more power and they are also easy to work on. I would go for a 250 2 stroke or maybe even a 300 or 380 if a cheap one pops up.

If your budget is $2k then a 250 2 stroke is a great choice. I'd look for the newest one with the lowest hours you can afford. Stock gearing you should hit 70mph easy.
