silencer packing burning?

The boy and i went down the street to an unplanted farm field and opened them up. Really cruzing- wide open on the pipe through all gears and my bike (2000 rm250) started smelling really bad. Got it home and the packing was smoldering. Repacked it and went back out and after about 40 minutes of flogging the bikes the boy's (2004 rm125) packing is smoldering. What gives? Too long between repacks-oil built up? Exhaust temps getting too high? I heard this is a problem on 4t's but not on smokers. Do i need to use steel wool from now on?

(p.s i use that really itchy tan/brown rockwool insulation. Never had a problem with it before and i get it for free.)

Do you get the insulation from Home Depot? If so, I heard people using the fire proof one. I just order FMF or FLY packing for about $7.

Thats what it was then. Guess we never had the room to really wind them out like that. I imagine it is similar to riding the desert with the loose sandy soil around here.

Try advancing your timing a bit. You'll lose a TINY bit of top end, but you'll pick up some amazing torque down low and your exhaust temps will be much cooler.
