96 xr600r head pipe glowing HELP!

Recommended Posts

I'm contemplating buying this bike from someone, it sat in a garage for many years. It has 550 miles in cherry shape.

Cleaned it all up, empty gas tank.. cleaned carb flushed fuel line, new air filter..

Bike fires up first kick, but in 30 SECS the head pipe starts to glow....

ANY IDEAS?? I shut it off ASAP as I am not the owner yet..

THANKS

Lean mixture from plugged carb. Clean the carb again, there might be a plugged air beed or passage. That would be the first thing I would do.

After that check the timing.

I would use it as a bargaining point and fix it after you buy it cheap. 👍

Most likely a lean mixture is causing this, take a look at the pilot jet and make sure that it is not partially plugged. What is the fuel screw setting? It should be 2 - 2 1/2 turns out from seated, more than that, the pilot is too small or obstructed somewhat. Did you disassemble the carb?
