How to Measure Float Height

Recommended Posts

Can someone tell me how exactly to measure float height? I always get different answers, is there a CORRECT way to do it? And if the float height is incorrect, how to you go about changing it?

I'll assume you have a FCR....

Carb off the bike, float bowl off.

Hold carb upside down at a 45 degree angle (thereabouts). You want the float tang to be just touching (and not depressing) the spring loaded pin on the float needle valve. Measure the height between the float and the carb flange (gasket/oring surface) to get the height.

To change the height, you VERY carefully bend the tang.

Set the height according to the number in your manual. Numbers vary from 8mm to 14mm

Pretty much the same for your carb. Top of the floats to the gasket surface - set at 7.5mm for the TMX. Make sure the tang is just touching and not compressing the spring. (check the height in your manual)
