xr 350. ticking and smokes... what could it be?

Recommended Posts

my dad is interested in buying a 83 xr350 for fairly cheap, and maybe restoring it a little bit.

the owner says it smokes and ticks a bit.

would the smoking be from the piston/rings?

and would the ticking be from the valves?

worst case scenario.. what would this cost to fix?

or can it just be fixed by simply buying a set of piston rings and shimming the valves?

thanks!

1...Probably,,might also be valve guides and seals or both

2,,Possibly,,might also be Cam Chain and guides and tensioner shagged..

3..Alberta, Canada..Expensive place ..maybe 2-300 dollars possibly more if the Cam Chain etc are shagged..

4,,Unknown until you get in there and mic things.,,the shimming the valves thing I have no idea about..

Constant smoking indicates that oil is getting past the piston/rings. The ticking could be valves, piston pin, cam chain loose. Beware of the pre '85 350s, they are famous for fried valve trains due to the top end running hot.
