CRF230F transmission / shifting issues

Recommended Posts

i know it is a common problem, as everyone i have ever talked to that has riden one of these bikes complains about it.. but hey.. why not try

anybody have any ideas how to correct the shifting issues on this bike?

you know what i mean.. trying to climb a hill... 2nd gear doesnt give enuff speed, 3rd gear always powers out, so you fly in using 3rd gear, just as you notice the power decline, you go to shift down to second.. wont go.. kick kick kick that shift lever, still wont go.. now you are powered out and stuck halfway up the hill..

every

single

time..

............

anything people can think of to solve this? or maybe we are all just SOL?

I've never heard of this shifting issue before, but maybe I am living under a rock. I thought the TT-230 had the shifting issue?

make sure your shifter is not loose on the shaft or bent in towards the case...

I have several of these bikes and have not heard of, nor experienced, the issue you mention

Kicking only works on a real horse, not an iron horse...

Have you uncorked the bike?

I still have very limited experience with mine so take this with a grain of salt, but I haven't had any issues climbing most hills in 3rd - unless it's a hill so steep that if I hit it at the speed at which the bike's in its powerband in 3rd I would flip over the handlebars. I take those in 2nd 👍

Sorry I know this is unrelated to your shifting issue.

my brother rides a crf230 and has never had a single problem with it shifting.

as for your power out issue try gearing it down a tooth on the front sprocket or goin a few teeth bigger on the rear that will help alot and wont cost much

yahhh when I had mine, I never had that problem nor did I have trouble climbing hills in 3rd. My bike never dropped below 6k so when taking hills, I would be slipping the clutch in 3rd all the way up. Either your shifter is hitting the cases or you have some kind of internal problem going on.

I have this problem going from 2nd down to 1st. Anytime I need to do a quick downshift from 2nd to 1st, I'll ususally end up stuck in neutral until the bike is at a full stop.

OK follow up time

this applies with either using the clutch or not using the clutch

i have tried everything i possibly can

^^ Greystoke i have the same problem, except it wont dump to neutral, just will not go down into 1st...

i have tried multiple adjustments on the shift lever, and same issue.. it is clearly NOT hitting anything going UP or DOWN.. so i suppose it must be an internal issue

the fellow recommended using an oil WITHOUT moly in it, as it would make the tranny slip.. so i have oil without moly in the bike...

i suppose next step is ripping the tranny apart 👍

It's probably one or more of these:

Gearshift cam 6

Stopper 7

Gearshift spindle 9

Gearshift plate 10

PS You don't have to split the cases to replace any of these... 👍

Are clutch engagement/release issues common on this bike?

I do have occasional issues getting down to first, and I've noticed that my clutch doesn't *seem* fully disengaged when I pull the lever (even with a brand new cable and proper adjustment). At least I don't think it's fully disengaging because when I start the bike in gear it jumps forward a bit (without my weight on it).

Marauder01,

I actually do know if this issue. The sad news, however, is I don't know the fix yet. I've been really busy with "life" so I can't get time to ride or work on the bikes, but if I figure it out, I'll track you down and share. I am stumped on this though. I have an idea though so maybe . . . Just maybe i'll know the answer. We'll see.

No shifting issues here. On the contrary, I've been impressed with how it'll go into gear even when I happen to do a poor job of shifting. I always use my clutch--habit...Maybe I'm not pushing the bike as hard as you are?

Good luck

My girlfriend was having shifting issues with her used '07 230F. She dumped it a lot when she was learning to ride. Finally, she dumped it hard one day and when we fired it up, it made an awful racket from under the right case.

I took the right cover off. The gearshift spindle and plate didn't seem to be seated right. The spindle was a little bent. I replaced it and all the springs, washers, and retaining clips along with a new plate and shift star. Parts were cheap and I got them in a few days. Repair is easy with manual. Don't have to split cases.

Shifts like a dream now. 👍
