2001 yz 125, any problems?

Overall they are a good engine. Common fault is a pin on the powervalves works its way loose, and one or both power valves wont open causing it to sound dohey.. Easy fix.

Next is the stator screw on the backing plate and on the coil pickup work themselves loose and cause havok inside the stator. Easy fix, replace with allen key bolts and plenty of red loctite.

Also depending on its use, the first 3 gears. The "dogs" can get rounded off causing them to jump to a higher or lower gear.

Then its all your usual stuff. Wheel bearings, Linkage + swingarm bearings. Check the carb if its worn. A good exercise would be to put a moose rebuild kit through it.

Rebuild it with fresh piston and ring before you start riding it. Best $100 well spent for piece of mind.

The '01 was the last in a basic model design that began in 1996. They had ironed out most of the problems pretty well by then. I had a '97, 2 '99s, a 2000 and an '01, and my '01 was maybe the best of them all. The thing was bulletproof and ran like a scalded dog.
