Shock pre load collar

Does anyone know the correct procedure for removing and replacing the pre-load collar....I removed the spring and threaded it down but it wont pass the black plastic rod cover. I can just break it because its pooched but how do I put the new one on? ?

The whole shock has to come apart so it can thread out the top. Not that easy unless you have worked on a PDS.

Send it off to factory connection if you don't have a local shop.

I live 15 mins from FC in NH ? Its actually my friends bike, I will get it from him on sunday.
