CR500AF conversion

Recommended Posts

I have heard that you are supposed to use a 1991 or newer engine to do the AF conversion. Why is that? Surely you could use other years also but they say 91 foward is best... I'm trying to figure out what year model bike I need to buy.

88's were the last year of the small SA bolt. So an 89+ is the ticket. I'd be shopping according to what tranny I wanted.........

The bushings in the back of the motor are hardened and have to be machined larger if you use a pre 89 motor.

88 thru 92 had MX gearboxes, close ratio. 93+ had taller 4'th and especially 5'th. Mine with motor work and a MX gearbox is pretty intense in 4'th and 5'th. 1,2,3 are all the same ratios.

You can use whatever you want, you don't "have to" use '91+. I prefer the newer 500 engines (no corrosion issues, rear bushing doesn't need modded, parts availability) over the 80's versions but use what you want.
