OEM Piston Rings install questions

Recommended Posts

Took me two weeks but they finally arrived.

My questions are:

The second ring has an "R" etched near the gap. I assume the 'R' should face UP and point to the rear? Correct?

So then how do I line up the rest? The top ring gap at 180 deg?

The 3 piece oil ring, should I stagger the gaps on all three sections? By how much?

Thanks in advance. It's my same old bone stock S by the way.

I know I should have a manual but I don't.

You can download it for free. I bought mine off eBay, great when I'm doing something on the bike and need to check something quick without washing my hands and going to the pc.

It is not that critical.

Oil ring - install the expander. Making sure the ends do not over lap. Install the lower rail with the end about 25mm from the expander joint. Install the top rail about 25mm from the expander joint in the other direction. "Clocking" to the piston is unimportant.

Second ring end should be about 120 deg from the oil ring joint. Top ring joint about 120 deg from the second ring joint.

It really is not very critical so as long as there is some offset in the ring gap orientations, it will be fine.
