XR 250 piston mystery

I hope it is only a mystery to me . The 1993 XR 250 I bought a few months ago to rebuild looked like it needed some top end attention as it was weeping quite badly from the head gasket. When I got the head off the gasket was in 5 layers! A total thickness of 1.65mm.

The stock gasket is 3 layers and is just .25mm thick.

The piston is marked KT1 and at T.D.C. stands 1.5mm above the barrel. Can anyone explain why this might be so and what I should do to make it work?
