2001 yz250f shifter?!?!

So here is my problem. On my 2001 yz250f my shifter keeps stripping. It is not the shaft out of the motor it is the actual lever. I can see that the shifter is aluminum and the shaft from the motor it steel. I have had to replace the shifter twice now and my buddy who had the bike before me said he has put on a couple of them to. I tried to search the forum on this but nothing came up. I can put a new one on and its fine for each riding season and then boom it will strip and just rest on the frame below it. Anyone else have this problem of remedy? thanks all

Most of the time when I have seen spline problems is when the shifter or even kickstarter is loose for an extended time. This allows dirt and grit in and the loose motion to gradually eat away at the splines. Wondering if this may be your problem and a periodic check may solve it. Clay

+1, If it is tight it can't strip, I check mine regularly, still find it loose ocasionally, bike has 195 hrs on it so it is not just a matter of bedding in. more likely from bing knocked and dropped on the trail. Assuming that you don't have a problem with the gear changes that puts too much pressure on the spilne?
