Question about the RES/ON/OFF fuel valve

Recommended Posts

Hi,

this is probably a dumb question, but yesterday I was taking a short run out in my brand new 2012 300 EXC, it had close to 1 liter of fuel in the tank..

and I was running with the valve in the ON position, most of the fuel was in compartment over the valve.

Suddenly the bike bogged and quit.. I could not get it to run...

then I changed it to RES position and it ran fine.

My tank is clear so I can see the amount of fuel I have left..

the dumb question would be, Is this normal????

Is the tank set up so that if I'm in the ON position with 1 liter remaining the fuel is cut off so you have to change it to RES, and hurry up to the gas station???

Kind off like a early warning!!! or do I have another issue I need to be looking for???

Put you bike up on a stand, level. Take off the fuel line from the petcock and install a line to empty the gas tank into a gas can. Move the petcock from off to on and empty the tank. Trade the gas can for a one gallon milk jug, switch the petcock lever to reserve, and let the gas flow until tank is empty. Now you'll know exactly how much gas is left for reserve. Mine is almost exactly 1/2 gallon.
