DR=Z400E Fuel Cock Repair

Recommended Posts

Most of you may know this........Suzuki does not show any repair guts for the non vacuum petcock for a DR-Z400E (like my 2004). Kawasaki sells the part that looks like a smiley face. Take your fuel cock apart, take out the old rubber insert, clean things up, put a little grease on the outer diameter o ring and reassemble. Cheapest way to fix an old petcock. I just did it an hour ago so I know it works!!

KAW part # is 43049-1066.

question: what are the symptoms that it needs repairing? i read about having fuel in the oil to be s symptom of this, but are there any others?

the reason i ask is because i performed an oil change on my bike about 2 weeks ago. it had a bit of fuel in the oil, but it had been left sitting for a couple of months through the winter with the fuel tap on. anyways after checking oil today i noticed a slight fuel smell to it. i am guessing it is just from the little residue that was left in the bike.

but just in case, would there be any other symptoms of a faulty petcock if there was fuel getting into oil?

If the petcock is leaking lots of fuel in the off position the bike will run with it off.

If you want to check it pull the fuel line off the valve with valve in off position and then see if fuel flows out the valve. Have a rag or cup ready to catch the fuel.

When these sit for a while the metallic part of the valve sticks to the rubber packing and then when you twist the valve it tears the rubber=leaky petcock.

The good news is you can repair it. Buy several of the rubber elements as spares. You'll need them.

I attempted a cheap fix yesterday....It seems as though it is working well. If the filter is still dry after a few days I'll post up w/pics. Two small "O" rings is all that was needed.
