Timing Chain Noise After Rebuild?

Recommended Posts

Hi, guys, got about 10 hours on a top end rebuild on my 2004, and when the engine has run for a while, there is a distinct noise that seems to be the timing chain hitting the guides.

We didn't replace the chain or guides. How do you go about diagnosing this? Can you measure chain stretch while it's still in the engine?

maybe the only way you can get a good idea of how stretched the chain is when its on the bike is to first set the engine to TDC. Then retract the tensioner all the way back, then slowly release it while counting how many turns the screwdriver makes until it stops. But heres the catch, you need to be able to compare this with how many turns out a new timing chain has, so you may need some help from someone else for this part.

can also tell if a cc is really worn, when the cam sprocket mark is above the cam tower timing mark at tdc. It will look like your close to a tooth off if the chain is REALLY worn.
