Are you wanting to put a 2001 kickstart on your 1990? Or do you just want one that looks like a 2001 to put on your 1990?

The only thing that will prevent the 2001 kickstart from fitting a 1990 would be the spline count. If they have the same spline count, it should fit with possibly just a little bit of fab work. If the splines are different, then you will have to do some custom fab to adapt it. It may not be worth the effort / time needed to make it work.

According to cyclepartswarehouse.com...

http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...les&mfg=Yamaha

...they list the same YZ250 kickstarter from 1988 to 1998;

KICK CRANK ASY

1988 - 4JW-15620-00-00 (replaces 4EW-15620-00-00)

1990 - 4JW-15620-00-00 (replaces 3SP-15620-01-00)

1994 - 4JW-15620-00-00 (replaces 4EW-15620-01-00)

1998 - 4JW-15620-00-00

...and the splines are the same from 1988 to 2001, so interchangability should not be an issue if you swap the entire assembly.

Most likely you can swap the upper part of the lever as well, but you may want to check parts lists online to verify o-ring sizes and such.

Good luck!
