Just wondering if anyone has dual sported there klx450r, and if so how is it, Too slow?, too hard on fuel? I have a kx 450 but it is too much :busted: around to make it into a dual sport, I would like to keep my kx a kx and get a bike like the klx for this purpose. "man if that ain't confusing". :busted:

yes, i have mine dual sported in South Carolina, stock gearing is a little to low, you will need to regear if you want to go faster than 55 for long trips, get a bigger fuel tank for longer trips,

14 front and 47 rear is good gear for dual sport

any steeper and you will not find 1st low enough

with this gearing I get 20 km per litre on mixed riding (trail & backroads)

with the acerbis 3.2 tank your good for over 200 km ( 120 miles)

would not ride 100 miles at 60 MPH on this bike - but thats me

and the seat would be uncomfortable by then any way

but the gearing is the same on a drz400 if you look at the ratios

the KLX450 is awesome to rip from trail to trail on the slab

after all this thing is meant to be ridden OFF ROAD

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

look into the ability of tagging or road legality in your area first

here it's getting hard to plate a dirt bike for the road if it's all ready platted offroad

also the lighting is 35 watts - so you will need to fix that for night riding.

Of course it can be done but you'll abuse the bike running highway miles even with a regear. If you're willing to spend the money on a new bike, look at KLR or XL.

thats what I did - exc 530 - love it !

sold it to a friend and he loves it so far - big step from his 250

I just sold a wr250r to make my Klx 450 r my dualsport . I am very happy with it although like you said the stator is weak and wont run any extra electrical things... Having my stator rewound at "Ricky Stator" and hopefully that will help with the problem .:bonk:
