Very Dissapointed with Dirt Rider mag

Recommended Posts

Just got my copy of Dirt Rider and on the cover it says 300cc Off-road comparison. When I flipped to the article, it should have read KTM Comparision. Very dissapointed :thumbsdn::). Since I ride a TM and they are making a comeback, I expected to see it included. Also, where are the gas gas and husqvarnas. My respect for the mag has really gone down hill. Just wanted to vent.

I too thought the same thing but i believe the 2012 gas gas and husky are not available to DR yet and the KTM's are.

I wouldnt get to down. Once you realize most big media, tv, radio, print is for profit and therefor for the sake of its own existince must pander to the major advertisers, he with the gold makes the rules, you,ll never look at another piece of information in the same way again. Consider this a revelation.I've allways believed mx action gave the most unbiased views the reason is the mag is 80% advertizing ang generates enough profit from non bike manufacturer products to support the publication as such the luxury of a more objective attitude.

I haven't waisted my time reading it but how can you compare 300's without having the GasGas, Husky, and it would be sweet to have the TM EN300?

I’m more PO’d with the content of the mag. You don’t get any stuff to actually read until page 25. The first 24 pages are filled with photos of guys on bikes in contorted positions wearing clothes that look like a box of crayons threw up on them. $#!t! DR is like hardcore bike porn. The articles with decent content are few and far between. I’ll be looking for another mag wen my subscription expires.

Think the bikes are offered up to the mags for testing, they don't go out and try to find them (which is darn near impossible with some of the absent brands). Not defending them but if the phone rang and offered me up the 3 bikes to compare, I wouldn't say no. The next model year may be out before the others coughed up a clapped out test bike.

It's not really a shootout or compairson unless you have all the players present.

The GG 300 is serious competition against the KTM.

I ride with a group of KTMers and I let everyone take a spin thru some of our trail sections....all were very impressed.

The Husky WR300 is in this issue also, just not the same test.......and yes RJ still has a LARGE ego, but some of his old pictures and insights were cool. Definitely disappointed GasGas was not included.

Hell, this was the best issue of Dirt Rider I've gotten in a long time.

The local GasGas dealer can't even get '12 bikes yet (he's already gotten and sold out 2 showrooms full of KTMs and Bergs), so I doubt there are any yet. And if you look, starting on p92, there is a full Husqvarna line up review, including the WR300. As for TM, they are such a boutique brand that it doesn't surprise me they didn't get one. Actually, I don't know how anybody would go about getting one. They have what, 2 maybe 3 dealerships in the whole country?

At least they didn't fill 10 pages with off road trucks, or a whole issue blathering about high $$ west coast riding areas that 3/4 (or more) of their subscribers will never see.

I've been disappointed with DR for a long time, but this one was almost like it used to be some years back. Still not going to renew when my sub runs out though.

No, Just 2 KTM's and a Husaberg (another KTM basically)... Article was a total waste of ink

Yeah... I would be pissed if I were Beta. They advertise in there religiously. Magazines don't skew their findings in reviews to favor their advertisers, but you would THINK that they would at least INCLUDE their product in a test! That's straight up ridiculous! 2 KTMS?!

 Does beta have a 300cc 2t?:)

To get a bike tested, you have to give one to the mag...

Mags have been useless for years. Way better info on the net and in your circle of friends. Biased crap is all that's in those rags anymore.

I gave up on DR when they did the 2T 250cc offroad shootout in the late 90's.

They gave the 96 or 97 (can't remember) Husqvarna 250WXE low points because everyone complained about the kickstart being mounted high up on the left side.... Well it clearly shows pics of it on the right side not to mention they were on the right side on the show room floor last I checked at the time  I can disagree with how they rate a bike and it doesn't really matter what I think, but that one kinda made me scratch my head wondering if they actually even rode the stupid thing.

97.... Oh man I'm getting old!

Would it have made any difference?? KTM would have one as most of them are either Honda or KTM bias. Even when they do have a good review, they lack many details as they are pro or near pro riders. Not on the same brain wave as us part time riders. Just like TV shows, just entertainment!

Flip side, all bikes now days are really great. It all comes to personal preferences and pro’s preference is way different than ours. It would hold more weight if all reviews were done by average riders.

I have given up on Dirt Rider. I'm just waiting for my subscription to expire. The current issue seems better to me than anything in the past year. I think it may have to do with the guest editor. Not that I'm a fan of Rick Johnson, it's just that he isn't the idiot that has been the editor. Anybody could've been a better editor, even my 12 year old nephew, than what's his nuts that just left. A new editor could be the best thing for the magazine. I understand that dirt bike mags have to be written at a pretty low reading level, but the amount of grammatical errors in each issue seemed to go up every month. I'm not renewing because the previous editor admitted he needs to be an editor but would rather go riding than do his job.

Maybe in a year I'll pick up an issue to see if it's better, worse or same.
