Recommended Posts

Does anyone know of a list that has all the designations (kx,crf, wrf,yz and the million ktm models) and explains the differences? My buddy is in the market for a bike and he keeps asking me about the various bikes and i'm just not much help, thanks!

Suggest you (or better yet, your friend) start here: http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=386

With Yamaha, and relative to each other, TTR's are for off road, trails, tracks, but the YZ is for more serious tracks or terrain, like true MX stuff. The XT is like a 'street legal' version of the TTR (but not the same bike), the WR the same to the YZ (but much more closely related) - so both the WR and XT could be classified as dual-sport. Note the WR and YZ are liquid cooled.

Here's a current thread on the difference b/w the XT and WR - http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1028007

What kind of riding would he like to do?

Thanks for the help. What i was looking for was a list of all the designations for all the brands and what they stand for. He is looking for a dual sport, street worthy and very off road capable so he's mentioned xr400 or wr450f etc. But we still get confused with things like (do all wr bikes come with lighting, etc.) Thats why a list or guide to all the designations would be nice, thanks!

OK. Hondarider listed them all, but to answer your question - yes, the WR's are all street-legal versions of the YZ MX bikes. Not identical, mind you.

On the WR models the WR(F) are not street legal from the factory. They have a tail and head light but no blinkers. You can add them and make it a street legal bike (depending on state and local laws). The WR(X) and WR® are street legal from factory. I believe there are other manufacturers that have the same set up as far as you need to add stuff to make them street legal

I own a WRF and here in AZ. the bike is only a brake light and mirror away from street legal, and you don't even need to prove it (if you register it at one of those third party registration places)
