Dr. Mark - How long should I wait to ride after breaking my tibia?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what the realistic time frame is for jumping back on my bike?

I compounded my tibia on October 28 and had a rod inserted down my leg.

I know I have a ways to go, but my physical therapist told me I shouldn't ride

for at least 6 months. That sounds like a long time away. My race season starts

mid-February.... is that realistic?

This pic was taken on the 29th after surgery.

The rod is inside my tibia and is screwed just above my ankle.

when you should ride is based on your strength, endurance and the presence of healing of the fracture. It would be good to post the X-ray

I'll see about posting X-Rays next Tuesday when my doc takes them.

Thanks!

Here's my X-Ray at 6 weeks. It will be 10 weeks by this Friday (Jan 6).

I feel like my progress has been going well since I got cleared to put weight on

my leg. I'm completely off pain killers, can ride the stationary bike as long as I

want, and can walk on it fairly well with out crutches.

I'm thinking of shooting to ride at the end of the month, but I don't want to push

it.

What do you think, Dr. Mark?

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Not likely. Why not post a new X-ray? This is like reading an old newspaper.

Those were my last X Rays my doctor took. Hopefully he takes some new ones

next week.

I should have posted them earlier, I know.

My doctor is really hard to talk to. I think he knows his stuff, but he has no

personality and doesn't really give me a whole lot of info regarding recovery.
