Really old XT500...RUNNING!!!! but something's not right...

Recommended Posts

So I cleaned up the electrical issues in my '76 XT500 that a previous owner used/abused/and eliminated all the street stuff (lights, battery, side stand, tach, speedo, etc.). Put in new points, condenser, cleaned out the carb, set the timing, etc.

Fired on the second kick tonight and rode it up and down the street pulled into the neighbors driveway, looked down and noticed the header pipe coming out of the head was glowing red!!!!!!!!!! That can't be right...

Is this a lean jetting issue with the carb? Or timing set too advanced.

Your thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

yes it is lean either not jetted right or something is blocking a jet try looking at the carb again maybe something is in the gas tank and getting in the carb

You might want to check the valve lash as well . Should have about .004" clearance on the intake and .005" on the exhaust .

Too tight or no valve lash could cause a 'hot' pipe , too .
