cam chain tension spring

Recommended Posts

Just pulled my head and cyclinder to helicoil the spark plug hole and I noticed that the spring for the tensioner is broke and the top long piece with the loop is missing. It wasn't in the top of the head and I don't see it in the bottom of the cam chain well. If this fell to the bottom is it possible to get it out by pulling the clutch cover or will it require a complete tear down...or should I roll the dice and hope it never gets into anything.

This is on a 95 xr100r

I would check the sceen. If it's not there, I would run a long magenetic rod and stick it into every part of the motor to find it. With the clutch cover off, you should be able get to 90% of the tranny. Drain the oil too. It could've fell out while draining the oil during one of the previous oil changes.

I kinda figured I would have to pull the clutch cover, just for cheap insurance and for my piece of mind. Hopefully it will show up in the bottom of the engine.
