06 CRF450R ticking/slapping at low idle.

Recommended Posts

I have a 06 CRF450R. At high/regular idle the bike runs fine. When I lower the idle down to regular/low idle, it will make a loud ticking/slapping sound and then die. I'm thinking cam chain or valves maybe? Help please.

Probably the drive chain slapping against the swingarm. Do a search on it.

They do this at extremely low idle and usually just before they die. Like Lead Head said, it is the decompression mechanism making the Tick, Tick, Tick noise. I freaked after I heard my bike do this.

I checked if my 05 450 made this sound at low idle until it died but it did not. It's my dads 06 450 with the problem.

The decomrpessor starts to kick in and thats what is making the racket.

It doesn't completely kick out until 1100 RPM. So if you've got the idle set at 1300, which sounds really slow, that's that it is. And its not good for the decompressor mechanism either.
