XR 200 and XL 185 questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I got a couple questions regarding what I believe to be a 1982ish XR200, and a unknown year XL 185. I bought the XR200 this summer and had a blast riding it, until the connecting rod bearing seized. Well I read somewhere that the crankshaft from a XL 185 is a direct replacement, so I convinced my buddy to let me take the crankshaft out of his non running XL 185. Anyways I tore both engines apart, only to discover that one of the main bearings on the XL185’s crankshaft is smaller, and doesn’t fit the XR200’s crankcase. :smirk:

So my question’s are, can I take the 185’s crankshaft to a machine shop and have them switch the bearings? Or are the crankshafts totally non compatible? Could I use the crankcase from the 185, and put the top end from the 200 on it? Any other ideas?

Here are the serial numbers from both crankcases in case it helps.

XL 185: MDO2E-5006661

XR 200: MEO4E-5002962

Thanks for any help! :bonk:
