Need some help identifying an engine.

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a four wheeler and it had an engine swap done and the person i got it form told me it was a 1995 yz250 engine but some parts are not simmilar to what I receve from parts. I was wondering if there was any Numbers on the engine that can help me figure out what it really is. I can guarantee it is a yamaha 2 stroke but everything else is questionable.

Thanks,

Josh

P.S. This is my first post on here Thanks agin for the help

Look on the drive side of the motor, in that general area. There should be a serial # with letters and numbers: JX12345... for example. Post up that # in here.

If you could post up a few pictures I'm sure someone on here will tell you what it is within a day.

Good luck

What DESERTKID said. :banana::bonk:

There will be a 3-digit code in various places on the motor, like 3V2-, or 4SS- or something like that. Check the base of the cylinder on the shifter side for "4MX00" right next to "249cm".

While sometimes not exact, those numbers will help narrow down which year the motor is.

And a picture will be worth a thousand posts. :smirk:

Welcome to ThumperTalk, Josh!

You should find something engraved like 4MX for a 95 250 on the left side of the cylinder and also on the case half on that side. My bike is a 91 and the numbers are 3XK engraved all over the bike. If its not 4mx it prob isnt a 250, or not a 95. Source: http://craigmac215.tripod.com/yzmodels.htm

...I picked everythign up for $150 so can't complain too much.

Looks to be a YZ250 (or Tri-Z?) cylinder from anywhere between 1982 and 1987, according to drawings in the parts lists...

...and a Bing image search...

Not sure how else to narrow down the exact year without a serial number or year code.

Looks to be a fun project!

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/1000333p.jpg/ Here is a tempoary pic I will get some more later and sign up to photobucket and upload them there. The flywheel cover is off in this one because I am replacing the flywheel key, I know everything is kinda rough but I picked everythign up for $150 so can't complain too much.

Right above the flywheel on the part of the case parallel to the ground should be some numbers or letters. Looks like its covered by dirt... But it should be right there.

A Tri-Z was Yamaha's first high-performance ATV...

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outdoor/epic_atv/1985_triZ250_small.aspx

...it used what was basically a YZ250 motor.

...

The flat area right behind the kickstart lever should have a string of numbers. That will be the serial number for the motor.

Whoo! It looks like you have your work cut out for you!
