Dual Sport Helmet

Recommended Posts

I was looking at some new helmets and the dual sport helmets with the face shield looked interesting. Has anyone used the dual sport type helmet for full time dirt biking? What are the pros and cons? The only thing I could see being a problem would be the dust sticking to the shield and having to wipe it off often. We only trial ride as a family so getting roosted is not usually to much of a problem.

Thanks,

Jim

+1 AFX FX39. Got mine at Atomic-Moto, love it.
:bonk:

Got mine through them about a month ago. The last time I looked at DS helmets (about two years ago) the AFX's were junk... didn't fit, and were just built cheap. Icon and Fly have since come out with their own models, and then there's Shoei/Arai if you've got $500 to throw towards a helmet. Great helmets for sure, but not worth that kinda money IMO.

Tried on the new AFX and I was sold. Fits well, visor is correct optically (Doesn't distort vision) and seals up to the helmet nicely, has a quick-release buckle, vents are adjustable. I got the orange/gray camo one for a little over $100 from Atomic Moto.

As far as it being a replacement for my dirt helmet... probably not. My old Joe Rocket DS helmet could fit goggles, the AFX doesn't fit with either my 509's or Haber goggles. It's even a little interesting with sunglasses. The visor's going to attract dust, as you wipe the dust off to see it's going to scratch up the visor.

However... for winter riding, or when it's rainy... they're -way- better than a MX helmet. Visor down, and the rain stays off your face.

So... in my closet I've got the DS helmet right next to my MX helmet, and wear whichever one suits the weather and my mood the best.

I have a Joe rocket DS helmet, made by HJC. It's nice. The shield flips far enough up to wear goggles, and it's obviously warmer in the winter than a typical MX helmet. Plus, your field of vision is much better without goggles. The disadvantage is that I feel it's hotter to wear in the summer than an MX helmet. When I ride around town to the store, etc I wear my Joe Rocket. When I'm going to trail ride I wear my MX helmet.

according to Atomic moto... The fx-39 and fly trekker are from the same factory, same mold.

I used to use a Nolan DS helmet and basically it had a street helmet shield with an MX visor and chin guard on it. It got beat so now I just use my Arai street helmet off road when I trail ride my KLR650 and to be honest its got a lot of things going for it. It keeps your face warmer in the winter and its got a bunch of vents in it for the summer. Being able to flip up the face shield with a flick is so much better than screwing with goggles and I can wear sunglasses no problem.

The thing about dust. As long as you always lead or leave a good break between you and the lead rider its not very difficult to manage. I never even notice dust on the shield until I get home and take my helmet off.

More to the point... if you have a street helmet try it out a few times off road and see if it works for you. If it does maybe one of those DS helmets would be a good choice.

Thanks for the posts. I like the idea of trying my street helmet to get an idea of what it may be like. I follow my wife and kids most of the time so I do eat a lot of dirt.:bonk:
