What shims do I start with?

Recommended Posts

I just put new valves in my bike. Is there a certain shim size I should start out with or am I just gonna have to take a wild guess and keep trying till i get it right?

1. read the manual and get the gap spec

2. measure the gap

3. subtract the gap spec, and install that size shim

4. re-measure

5. torque to spec and re-measure.

Use your thinnest shim. Measure a valve, get the clearance (if there is none, you need to source an even thinner shim), calculate what shim that valve needs, do the next valve.

Be sure to use a micrometer on the shims as the marked size can fluctuate.

Cam chain does not need to be on during this in fact the head does not have to be on the bike.

Once the bike is up and running, after the first ride, recheck the clearances. Not uncommon for the valves and shims to settle a little and the clearances to change.
