2004 KX250 or 2001 CR250R

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a 250 now, coming off a KX125. Before the 2002 KX125 I had a 2002 CR125 and I much preferred the CR. I've found these 2 bikes,

2004 KX250

The KX250 looks pretty clean, obviously it's should be as it's a 2004 model. It hasn't been ridden for 3 years, rebuilt 6 mths before he started riding it. Like I said with the cr125 and the kx125 I much rathered the mid-top end of the cr125, I felt the kx125 being more of a bottom-mid range bike, and I've looked up the 04' KX250 and it has loads more bottom and mid range, with the cr having a good mid-top which I enjoy. She won't drop from $3,000.

2001 CR250

Now the CR250 has horrible photos, but I will obviously be looking at both the bikes. Obviously the CR250 is 3 years older, the owner has had it for 3 months and doesn't know when it was last rebuilt. Comes with another set of plastics and also has a Power Core pipe which is another plus, I also reckon he will drop to as low as 2300.

I don't know whether it's worth the extra pennies for the KX250 or not, obviously re-sale I will make my money back, probably gain even more so it might be a good investment, and later buy a CR250?

Any input would be great,

Cheers.

Yeah, problem is the owner of the KX250 won't drop from $3,000, where as the bloke with the CR250 will take 2300, easy 2500.

01 CRs are fine bikes. I just bought one, and am still going through it. The 2000 model Carb is a pwk 38.

Sells them for $164.95 brand new.

And if it ever gets too slow you can heave a 500 motor into. Quality on the CRs are first rate. Unless its a train wreck you would be going wrong with it.

Here's a story bought a guy going back to one:

Maybe its the 04 but my 05 kx250 is all mid range to top end. I have never heard any different. Have only ridden my brothers 04 cr250 so can't say much on the 01

I'll put my vote for the 01 cr also. I love mine so I am biased. That being said the kx is newer and would think also be a great bike. ...but for 700 or so bucks more you could do a bunch of decent maintenance and upgrades to the cr. There's tons of info on 01 cr's here on TT also so that is another benefit. Check out the TT garage and look at cr 250's for ideas on what you may want to put on the cr if you get it. I found it usefull for ideas for my bike. The same could be said if you end up with the kx too.:bonk:

Never ridden, one, just read some reviews saying they've made the bottom end better, not sure if this effects the top though.

Had a 03 KX250. Not alot of bottom end power there. Believe '04 is same.

Yeah only going by the reviews mate, I'm very keen on the 01', seems the 01' engine seems to be the best and I loved my CR125, I was just wanting a 6th gear and more power, the 01' cr250 has 5 again, I may gear it a little taller later on down the track though.

Get the 01 cr250.. Best year for the engine.. I have had a built 01 250r and it was a great bike.. You won't get bored of it easily.. And kind of hard to beat honda reliability..
