Red hot headers

Recommended Posts

I just came home to my xr400 and knew I needed carb work done b/c gas had been sitting in it for a few months. Bought some carb cleaner and cleaned everything inside, put it back in and I can only start it with the air filter off and it wont stay on without throttle. After a minute or so the pipes got red hot so I shut the engine off. Also while the engine is on it sounds like hell. Is this just a lean/rich mixture problem or do I need to pull the carb out again?

did it run fine before you left it? Typically that would tell me its running too lean, try turning the air screw out half a turn ... also, may look at the packing in the baffle

I know you just misspoke and meant to say "fuel screw". And the baffle has no packing to check.
